The Raven in the name of the Club's weekly bulletin.

It is a carry over from the Woden Rotary newsletter

Woden Rotary was formed in 1969 and located in the Woden district located in the 'Woden Valley' to the south of central Canberra.
The Woden district began to evolve as a separate entity of 12 suburbs in 1962 and families started to move into the first suburb of Hughes, in 1963.

Woden the Nordic god

AKA Oden, Wodan, Woden, and Wotan

One of the principal gods in Norse mythology.

The basis for The Raven

The Woden Rotary founding Board included Stuart Garnsey who was the first headmaster of Woden Valley High School and were influenced by the Woden legend.

Garnsey, following extensive research by a wide range of people both from within and outside the school community, stated that the classical origins of 'Woden' in the school name influenced his creation of the school's crest, motto 'thought, wisdom, memory' and the school's annual magazine name 'The Raven' at the end of 1968.
In Woden Rotary's early papers, there is detailed information about Odin.

And it was noted that Woden Rotary met each Wednesday (Woden's day) - it is tempting to conclude that the founding Board determined Wednesday as the Club's meeting day because of the Odin connection.

The Murrumbidgee Canberra Rotary meets on Wednesdays.

Woden Rotary crest

The Woden Rotary crest was first used at the first changeover dinner on 24 June 1970.

 It comprised two elements:

  • two ravens:  Huginn (Old Norse: 'thought') and Muninn (Old Norse 'memory') fly all over the world and bring information to the god Odin.
  • a stylised Norse helmet incorporating the word 'Odin'
